Talking In Whispers
Why do we dance
in the light of the Twilight
On silver strings,
Tinted blue?
in the riddles we speak
When all they want is the truth?
We hold our breath
Through torment and pain
Through wires
electric sharp.
So they may not touch
the anguish they cause,
with the love that we
feel in our heart
When talking in whispers
In voices for those
who have none
The fire we light,
the flicker of hope
The candle
we have to let burn.
This was written as part of some English homework on a book of the same name by James Watson (thanx to Rachel Meldrum for that!) The book, which I studied for my GCSE English, was about the corrupt regime in power in Chilli and the resistance against it. It was a brilliant book. This poem though concerns the chapter where Andres, the main character, had been caught by the Junta as is being tortured. Awful stuff, I cant stand torture scenes (though I don't imagine anyone actually enjoys them) but, it provoked an emotional response in this poem which won me one of five winning places in my school's poetry competition and it was then published in a book; Hampshire Future Voices - cool huh?!
